Joko Sengova, Ph.D.

Brief Biography

Dr. Sengova is faculty Assistant in Research/GEAR UP II Program manager in the Department of Child and Family Studies. His primary responsibilities include on site supervision and coordination of GEAR UP academic services at Hillsborough High School: in class/pull out, after school, Saturday and summer program tutoring; case management service delivery; and school district GEAR UP payroill administration. He is USF's main liason with the school administration and district Special Revenue which reports all GEAR UP district payroll and transportation bills. He provides primary supports and assistance to the project director/principle investigator in all program administration implementation. He hires OPS tutors and signs their time sheets for USF payroll. He supervises and monitors case management tracking/follow-up on apporxamiately 800 GEAR UP and non GEAR UP students, especially seniors targeted for post secondary placement. He is responsible for timely and effective implementation of all program activities at the school site and community. Dr. Sengova also continues to follow his life long professional research interest in linguistics, human languages and cultures, especially those related to the African Diaspora and his original West African ancestry. He has published several articles and book chapters in this area, including five recent (2006) publications on Gullah, Geechee, and teh Sea Islands in the Greenwood Encyclopedia of African America Folklore; Gullah/Geechee Communication in Yelvington's Afro-Atlantic Dialouges: Anthropology in the Diaspora; and his native Sierra Leone's Aborigines and Returnees in Dixon-Fyle and Cole's New Perspectives on the Sierra Leone Krio. Dr. Sengova is an avid lover of nature and the outdoors.
