Description

GEAR UP offers academic, educational and enrichment supports to students in the 10th and 11th grades at Hillsborough High school. We serve over six hundred students providing resources and services that provide them with the academic support they need to help make them successful in school. With the majority of our program staff housed at Hillsborough High school, we work primarily with minority students, low-income students and other students who are at risking of dropping out of school. Our program offers variety of educational activities and supports for students and their parents with the main goal of helping students achieve academic success in school, graduate and prepare for placement into vocational/technical schools, community college, four-year universities and the work force. Through federal and match funds, and community partner organizations, GEAR UP offers a variety of educational resources and compliments the services array with a number of different enrichment opportunities for students and their parents. The primary services include the following:

  1. In class Tutoring
  2. Pull-out Tutoring
  3. After school and Saturday Program Tutoring
  4.  Enrichment and Leadership Development Programs-          Leadership programs- -          PRODIGY, Learning Diversity Program-          Recycling Club-          Self Improvement Through Cultural Exchange-          The art of self Improvement-          Volunteer Opportunities
  5. Parental Involvement and Saturday Program Workshops

Throughout the academic year including summers, we offer resources and services for our students. Our staff of three case managers, an academic coordinator, parent liaison, and project manager work individually and in groups with students assessing their needs and addressing those needs using the different strategies outlined above.

In 2007/2008 GEAR UP staff will work with our 11th graders to help prepare them for graduation and college focusing on FCAT remediation for those students who need it, and exposing students to various placement options, and leadership programs and provide case management and mentoring. We will work with intensively with our 12th grade cohort with a goal of placing 150 of our students into one of four post secondary settings: vocational/technical, two year, and four year schools and the work force. GEAR UP anticipates positive results as it works with students some of whom have been with the program since 2002 when they were at Memorial Middle school.
